Scooby's Progress

14th September 2011

Our last update on Scooby

Scooby

The Scooby appeal will close at the end of September but if anyone would like to send a donation it will be most gratefully received.

Denise has asked us to express her sincere gratitude to all of you who have given so generously to help poor Scooby. She told us “I am humbled by everyone's generosity and I am so grateful for all the support you have all shown both myself and Scoobs.”

With the help of the P & C, and the generosity of our members and the public, we have been able to pay almost half of the original bill. I know we all wish Scooby the best for a complete recovery and a long happy life.

Here’s how he’s doing -

Scooby is doing well but his open wound to his foreleg has become static. It originally measured approx. 7.5cm x 5.5cm and has reduced dramatically to 4cm x 2.5cm but has not shrunk in the last 3 weeks. It is a healthy clean wound, and has good granulation but the skin appears to have stopped growing across. He continues to visit our local Veterinary clinic on a regular basis for a re-dress and has an appointment at Grove Lodge in Worthing to see the surgeon and discuss a skin graft as this appears to be the only option remaining unfortunately! I have been quoted £2,000 by one vet hospital for the skin graft but am hoping that the surgeon at Grove Lodge will be able to offer it at a much reduced price! Fingers crossed!

It is now 9 weeks since Scooby's accident and he continues to make a good recovery

Scooby continues to make good progress and has been so patient over these past weeks. He has gained weight and is getting more exercise now as he gains strength and can walk about the house.

He is obviously monitored regularly and the only ongoing treatment he receives is the changing of the dressing on his front leg which his own vet now thinks is less likely to need a skin graft.

It is a week since we appealed for help with Scooby’s vets’ bills and five weeks since his accident

The photographs speak for themselves and are a great reassurance that he is on the mend. Even in the first week or two, the vet was able to say that improvement was being made, albeit in very small ways initially.

Although he stays in his confining pen at night for safety, he is allowed out of it when Sam, his young owner is around. Last week, as a special treat he was carried upstairs for the first time since his ordeal, to lie on Sam’s bed with him. Never had a cat purred so loudly!

As soon as he is out of his pen in the mornings he walks straight to the kitchen where he knows his meals are always put and enjoys his food. Although he is not allowed out yet he tells the family he’d like to be in the garden and so this week he was allowed to lie out, under supervision, for half an hour one sunny evening.

Next week the xfix will be removed and he no longer needs to wear the pain relief patch. He only has a bandage on the front leg, which sustained a serious wound, but will still need on-going visits to the local vet every 3 days for some time to come to have the dressing changed. Eventually a decision will have to be made as to whether a skin graft is necessary.

Scooby is rather enjoying all the attention he is getting and being rather spoiled. We think he deserves it for his bravery and patience throughout this terrible experience.

A big THANK YOU from Paws & Claws on behalf of Scooby, Sam and Denise for your kindness and generosity in helping us raise so much
