*** Homing Afternoon 24 June is cancelled ***

Apologies for any inconvenience caused

Due to circumstances beyond our control we have unfortunately been forced to cancel this date.

Welcome to our web site

We are Paws & Claws Animal Rescue Service a small cat rescue charity, founded in 1977 covering the Mid Sussex area. We have many lovely cats looking for adoption who would love a new home.

We hold many fundraising events during the year and attend many others throughout the Sussex area.

Cats of Courage

We took 16 year old Gizmo and his sister, Gizzy into our care just after Christmas when they were about to become homeless.

Before op

We could see he had a problem in his left eye. Our vet was due her visit that week and immediately diagnosed glaucoma. This is a condition in which high pressure occurs in the eye, with a failure of normal fluid drainage from the eye. A chronic condition with pressure against the optic nerve, will eventually cause permanent damage to the optic nerve, resulting in blindness. Sadly this condition is very painful as well. It is not reversible, and by the time the clinical signs of glaucoma are noticed, substantial, or total vision loss will already have occurred. It was decided that an operation to remove the eye needed to be carried out as soon as possible.

Gizmo has been as good as gold and such a brave boy, though wasn't keen on wearing a buster collar for a few days. Having been in the same home since kittenhood, it must have been upsetting for the pair to find themselves with us, and then separated for nine days while each went through necessary surgery.

Gizzy

Gizzy's mouth was obviously sore as she was eating very little and she was dehydrated. Throughout examination this dear little cat was purring so loudly that it was hard to hear her heartbeat! Blood test results were normal but one large back tooth needed to be extracted and she was an inpatient overnight to ensure restored appetite. Back with her brother, she tucked into her supper and settled down in her favourite spot for a good nights sleep, with Gizmo, likewise, on a shelf above her.

Life in the Pavilion

After the excitement of Christmas life in the Pavilion has settled down again. Thank you to everyone who gave presents (and turkey scraps) to the cats as well as those who donated funds to help them.

For those, who don't know, the Pavilion is our special facility for long-term resident cats - those that are not easily rehomed.

We try and find suitable homes for all the cats that pass into our care but sometimes it just isn't possible.

However many cats have left the Pavilion to go to new homes, it has just taken a little time for the right person to come forward.

In the meantime they can live out their lives with us, receiving all the care and attention they need, so long as they have good quality of life, in our vet's opinion.

You learn about our resident cats here.

You can help support the Pavilion by becoming a Sponsor or by making a one-off donation below.
